I grew up by the sea in Aberystwyth in Wales. It rains a lot in West Wales and to this day I love the sound of rain beating on the roof and windows. My first school was a tiny village school, which had just three classes. It was a bit of a shock to the system to go up to "big" school, which had nearly 1000 pupils. I loved science at school, and in the end I went and got a degree in it at Cambridge University.

That all seems like a long time ago now. These days I spend my time writing about science, thinking up rotten jokes and picking my nose. I love listening to old-timer country-blues guitar pickers and try my best to play it like them (though it never works very well).

What's your favourite Element?

I'm fond of Fermium because Basher gave me one of his artworks as a Christmas present one year

What is your favourite book that you wrote?
(Kale Martine, 4th grade)

I enjoyed writing Oceans because of the awesome animals that live down there. I've always loved Dinosaurs and Technology was cool too.

Which book was hardest to write?

Algebra was really tough to write - finding ways to make math operations into cool characters was really tricky! However, it was probably one of the most rewarding bits of writing I have done in the end.

Do you like writing fiction or non-fiction books better? (Kale Martine, 4th grade)

Wow. Good Question! I think I prefer writing nonfiction books. There's a lot of fun to be had trying to understand how things work and then weaving the facts all into an interesting story. Fiction can be scary because your options with where you take your story are so open. I do enjoy the challenge of writing fiction, I just don't think it comes as easily, I guess. I hope that answers your question, Kale.

Biscuit or cake?

My girlfriend bakes the best cupcakes, and she even puts popping candy on some of them. So, cake please! With a cup of tea. Mmmm.
